A matching mini violet dress – A BSD Pattern

So, there was the tiniest scrap of fabric remaining from my very-loved Violet Dress . I figured that if I was going to make my daughter a matching dress from it, I might as well snag the Violet dress for girls pattern * while it’s still on sale right?

image

Purchased the pattern, printed, assembled and cut one afternoon, and finished sewing and photographing the next day. Since I’d already made the Violet dress * for myself, I breezed through the construction barely having to refer to the instructions.

image

This really is my favorite picture of the lot! Those straps are just lovely, and the shape of the dress just gorgeous!

image

This ended up being a bit shorter than intended (I cut between the top length and dress length) because I was working with very minimal fabric yardage. This length is almost similar to my Violet dress, and I really couldn’t love it any more on her!

image

For the darling little flounce, I did a rolled hem (one of the recommendations for finishing the hem that is included in the pattern). I did not finish the bottom hem, since it’s knit and won’t fray and I didn’t want to shorten the dress further.

The Violet dress & Top for girls* comes in sizes 6m to 12y with good quality instructions, well drafted pattern pieces and neat finishing details that guarantees a professional quality handmade item. I have already professed my love for BSD here and here lol!

Both the girls* and ladies* Violet Top & Dress patterns are now on sale, which ends today! Or you can get both patterns in a bundle here*.

*If you buy the pattern through one of my affiliate links, I get a small percentage of the sale at no additional cost to you and you will help support my blogging adventure. Thank you.

Violet Dress & Top – Pattern Testing for Bella Sunshine Designs

Summer’s my favorite season – Cheerful sunny days, annoyingly bright sunlight streaming through the windows, late sunsets, fruits all kinds of fruits, no school and no lunch boxes, beach picnics and summer breezy dresses!!! I love summer tunics and dresses, and I love shopping for them, but this is actually my first time sewing a summer dress for myself – The Violet Dress & Top by Bella Sunshine designs is everything you’d want for in a breezy summer dress (aff)*. It’s a comfortable knit dress which is well fitted and has a pretty flounce (that is optional) in the front, and a delicate looking back with criss cross straps.

image

I made this out of a poly spandex knit with sort of a border print that I wish I had a little bit more of, so I’d have been able to center the print but I still love it!! Fabric is from Fine Fabrics.

image

Isn’t the back detail lovely? I loved learning how to make these delicate looking spaghetti straps (with clear elastic for added stretch and stability) from this pattern. Between the straps and the lovely flounce, I can’t decide which is my favorite feature!

One thing that I really love about the Violet Dress & Top is the fit, it’s just perfect (aff)*. I have a small frame and it’s not unusual for me to have gaping at the neckline and under the arms in ready to wear dresses. So it was a pleasant surprise when I wore this dress for fit check and realized how comfortable and flattering it was with absolutely no weird gaping anywhere.

Another reason why I really like using Bella Sunshine Designs is how much importance is given to neat finishing details, both on the inside and outside.

image

I am shorter than average so I shortened the pattern piece by an inch as soon as I printed the pattern out. Admittedly I was worried it might be a bit too short, but I love it, length and everything!

image

It bugs me so much that the design is not in the center back 😦 but oh well! I was working with a remnant fabric here.

I have a few Bella Sunshine Designs patterns by now and I love how effortlessly a project sewn with a BSD pattern goes. Their instructions and pattern pieces are impeccable, not to mention how perfect I find the fit – It’s always a bonus when you don’t have to fiddle with fitting right?

image

The Violet Dress & Top, (on release sale for $9.00) goes from sizes 0-20 with pattern pieces included for larger cup sizes as well which means no adjustments required! This quick summer sew can be made with or without the flounce, and the length of the straps can be adjusted as well!

What’s even more wonderful is that this pattern comes in girl sizes too! – The Violet Dress & Top for girls is now available for $7.00 (release sale price) or you can get both the ladies and girls pattern as a bundle – The Violet Dress & Top – Bundle for only 12.00 now. (aff)

*I was given the pattern for free in exchange for testing the pattern, but all opinions in the review are my own.

Swallowtail Dress – lil luxe collection

The Swallowtail top and dress was released by lil luxe collection last week!! And how awesome is it that we got to test this sweet delicate dress!?!

image

I love the Swallowtail pattern description on their website “This vintage inspired pattern is everything a girl could ask for: sweet, breezy and topped with a bow!” Absolutely true!!!

image

Oh but that bow! and that open back! sigh!! I love it so very much!

image

image

For the bodice, I used a loosely woven handloom fabric from Fine Fabrics Atlanta (They don’t have a website), it is so soft so perfect for this pattern, and I love how those ties drape over her back rather than stand out stiffly. And for the skirt, this denim jacquard from JoAnn fabrics.

Contrary to what I first thought, this pattern comes together rather quickly. And has two things that I’ve grown to really appreciate and look for, in sewing patterns: Extremely well drafted pattern pieces, and beautiful finishing techniques (even on the inside).

imageimage

Right before we went for pictures, I was possessed by a need to make a top knot headband for her and I’ve never really made headbands and accessories lol! Since I was using woven fabric and didn’t want to fuss with elastic, I shirred about 5 inches of the headband with several rows of elastic thread in the center back.

Watching my little one in clothes that I made is truly gratifying, and that experience is even more rewarding when the pattern used is as well drafted and clearly explained as this one!

The swallowtail Top and Dress come in sizes 18m – 10y with options for a top, knee length dress or Maxi dress.  With no need for zippers and buttonholes, its a great beginner’s pattern, not to mention quick-sew. It has beautiful feminine flutter sleeves that I totally left out for this dress 🙂

Until next time… Happy Sewing!!!

Papillon Shorties – Testing for lil luxe collection

I am so excited to be part of the lil luxe collection‘s test team, and just finished testing two patterns for them, can I just say I love everything about being in their test team!

The Papillon shorties are a fabulous addition to your little one’s summer wardrobe. With details like the scalloped waistband and pleats, they are super quick to sew up.

image

This was my first test version, and I used a flocked dot cotton from JoAnn fabrics along with ric rac for the scalloped edge.

image

Don’t these slant pockets add style!

image

The pattern and the instructions for the scalloped waist band are detailed and precise, and these shorties come together without a hitch!

The pattern goes from 18m to 12 years, is layered with easy to understand instructions and accompanying illustrations.

And because I made another pair, here’s another one of the Papillon Shorties!

image

I paired the shorties with the Lily top from Frocks & Frolics made in linen. I adore this pattern so much, and must’ve made half a dozen tops and tunics with them, you can see my detailed review here.

And that’s a wrap for today 🙂

Happy Sewing!!
